Match Report: Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester City

This article first featured in Edition #7 of the RMD magazine (March 3, 2020)

Manchester City were expected to dominate the EFL Cup final against Aston Villa and easily win their third consecutive title in the cup competition, and in truth that was very much the case as Pep Guardiola’s men rang out relatively easy winners at Wembley.

Overwhelmingly in control of possession and dictating the play across the pitch, they opened the scoring through Sergio Aguero’s 20th minute finish. It had been coming from pretty much the first whistle and despite Aston Villa’s resilient defending, the breakthrough eventually came when Manchester City oped against attempting to pass it through their opponents and instead played it over the top.

Match Report: Everton 1-1 Manchester Utd

This article first featured in Edition #6 of the RMD magazine (March 2, 2020)

Football these days can’t seem to go a single weekend without drama, with the pantomime villain of the video assistant referee (VAR) seemingly always taking centre stage in the theatrics. Everton’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United proved no different this weekend, as the VAR system cracked its knuckles, reared its head and provided some trademark late controversy.

The match had got off to a bizarre and almost farcical start when after just three minutes Everton found themselves a goal ahead in the most bizarre of circumstances.

Match Report: Tottenham 2-3 Wolves

This article first featured in Edition #5 of the RMD magazine (March 2, 2020)

Champions League qualification has become the race keeping everyone at their best now, with the Premier League title all but wrapped up by Liverpool and Manchester City’s financial indiscretions meaning a fifth place qualification spot might well be on the cards.

As such, the match between Tottenham and Wolves promised far greater importance than it might have done just a few months back, as both sides look to finish their respective seasons as strongly as they can. In particular, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side who, having begun their own European adventure so early this campaign, are near bordering on 50 competitive matches played already this season and battling to ensure late season fatigue doesn’t hamper their final few results.

Match Report: Watford 3-0 Liverpool

This article first featured in Edition #4 of the RMD magazine (March 1, 2020)

Sometimes football makes no sense. With Liverpool unbeaten in 44 league games and frankly dominant this season, their Premier League clash with struggling Watford at Vicarage Road seemed likely to be little more than another routine win for Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

So, naturally the game proved to be anything but what was expected as Watford put on a classic of the highest proportion. Nigel Pearson’s men even successfully managed to pull themselves out of the relegation zone on goal difference following their 3-0 victory.

Match Report: Manchester Utd 5-0 Club Brugge

This article first featured in Edition #3 of the RMD magazine (February 29, 2020)

Manchester United had scrapped a 1-1 draw in Belgium in the first leg against Club Brugge and knew they needed a result on home soil with growing dissent among the terraces. However, even in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wildest dreams, he probably couldn’t have predicted quite the result they achieved, helped significantly because of an early red card to defender Simon Deli after a moment of madness.

There hadn’t been too much in the match up until the 22nd minute when Deli was sent off for a ludicrous handball to block Daniel James’ shot. Diving to his side, with an arm outstretched, only Deli can know what the defender was thinking but it gave the referee no choice but to show the straight red card.

Match Report: Arsenal 1-2 Olympiacos A.E.T

This article first featured in Edition #2 of the RMD magazine (February 29, 2020)

Going into the second leg of their Europa League Round of 32 clash with Olympiacos, Arsenal knew they had a one goal advantage from the earlier tie in Greece, so all they had to do was stick to the game plan and see out what should have been a relatively routine victory.

Obviously, that didn’t quite happen.

Match Report: Newcastle 0-0 Burnley

This article first featured in Edition #1 of the RMD magazine (February 29, 2020)

As far as exciting football prospects go, the Premier League clash between Newcastle and Burnley wasn’t one which offered supporters much reason to expect a good spectacle, even despite the huge significance of the result for both sides. Newcastle’s inability to score needed rectifying in this match, while visitors Burnley couldn’t risk losing and being clawed slowly back into the relegation battle they’d done so hard to escape from after their poor early season form.

Unfortunately, that message didn’t seem to get passed down to the players on the pitch as the two sides played out a pretty miserable goalless draw.
