Match Report: Manchester Utd 2-0 Manchester City

Manchester has long been home to one of the Premier League’s biggest rivalries, with the blue half of the city having had the lion share of success in the most recent seasons. As such, seeing manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer guide his team to their first league double over their rivals in a decade will have represented a rare cause for celebration for the currently disgruntled Manchester United supporters.

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson was culpable for both of the goals his side conceded to their rivals, though in vastly different circumstances.

Carlo Ancelotti likely could not have dreamt of a worse return to Stamford Bridge as he watched his Everton side brushed aside by a dominant Chelsea team keen to show off their attacking prowess.

Boosted by boss Frank Lampard’s decision to introduce 18-year-old Billy Gilmour for his full Premier League debut, Chelsea had a greater tempo than their Merseyside opponents from the very first minute and took just 14 minutes to take advantage of their superiority.

Match Report: Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

Video assistant referee decisions have been the talking point all throughout the season, with supporters still regularly bemoaning the system but becoming increasingly accustomed to the new, strange era of football in which we inhabit. We’ve all now fully fallen into the grasps of Stockholm Syndrome with Stockley Park nowadays.

However, even by VAR standards, the omnipotent officials who monitor the video feeds were on a mission during Southampton’s Premier League clash with Newcastle. For a system usually criticised for being inconsistent in whether or not to penalise an incident, those in charge of the clash at St. Mary’s were determined not to fall into that category.

Match Report: Derby 0-3 Manchester Utd

Odion Ighalo continues to justify his surprise move to Manchester United in the January transfer window, as the Nigeria international struck twice again as his side overcame Championship side Derby in a relatively comfortable FA Cup Fifth Round victory at Pride Park.

Overshadowing the return of Wayne Rooney against his old club was only ever going to possible with a performance of the highest standard, and that was exactly what Ighalo did for his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Having been mocked as a novelty signing when it was confirmed, all of a sudden Ighalo’s move to Manchester United is starting to look like some extremely shrewd business.

Match Report: Tottenham 1-1 Norwich (2-3 PENS)

Few things are quite as iconic in domestic cup football than watching a dramatic penalty shootout upset, with a goalkeeper saving multiple spot kicks to lead his side to victory. That was just what the country watched on a brisk Wednesday night when Norwich’s Tim Krul denied both Troy Parrott and Gedson Fernandes to claim a surprise FA Cup victory for the Canaries.

Having been expected to be brushed aside by Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side, Norwich turned up the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium determined not to be dragged down by their struggles in the Premier League this season, currently rooted to the foot of the table and fighting tooth and nail to try and save themselves.

Match Report: West Brom 2-3 Newcastle

Newcastle are truly entering uncharted territory with their cup run so far this season, as they challenged West Brom for a place in the Quarter Finals, the first time under Mike Ashley they have been anywhere near the latter stages of a cup competition. Despite ongoing struggles, particularly in front of goal, in the Premier League, Steve Bruce’s men knew a win at The Hawthorns would position the Magpies incredibly just a single game away from a trip to Wembley.

As such, there was outright pandemonium in the away end as Newcastle came out the gates swinging in the match.
