Player Spotlight: Danny Welbeck

Danny Welbeck is an experienced English international striker who currently plays for Premier League side Watford, having joined the Hornets in August 2019.

The 29-year-old forward was born in Manchester and began his football career in the youth academy ranks of Manchester United. After seven years steadily progressing through the youth ranks, Welbeck was first called up to the senior team in January 2008 and began to train and become part of the club’s first team setup, though didn’t get his first competitive outing for the side until the following season.

Player Spotlight: Conrad Balatoni

Conrad Balatoni is an English centre back currently playing for Edinburgh City in the Scottish League Two, the fourth tier of football within Scotland.

The 29-year-old defender began his career in the youth academy ranks of Hearts, having been born in Leeds but moved as a youngster to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. Balatoni failed to make a first team appearance for the club he supported, Hearts, before being released in January 2012.

Match Report: West Brom 2-3 Newcastle

Newcastle are truly entering uncharted territory with their cup run so far this season, as they challenged West Brom for a place in the Quarter Finals, the first time under Mike Ashley they have been anywhere near the latter stages of a cup competition. Despite ongoing struggles, particularly in front of goal, in the Premier League, Steve Bruce’s men knew a win at The Hawthorns would position the Magpies incredibly just a single game away from a trip to Wembley.

As such, there was outright pandemonium in the away end as Newcastle came out the gates swinging in the match.

Cover Feature: Expanding the A-League in the right location

Australian football has been on an upward journey over the last few years, as greater investment floods into the domestic top division, the A-League, and fanbases become vaster and more established. Well-known names have moved to play their domestic football in the country, while similarly the country continues to export more and more talented young stars.

Operating their top flight on a franchise system not dissimilar to the MLS in the United States, financially-strong, successful clubs are able to be born out of far less heritage and pre-established history than in traditional promotion and relegation systems, but it does also present officials in charge of Australian football’s premier division a different dilemma.
