Cover Feature: Expanding the A-League in the right location

Australian football has been on an upward journey over the last few years, as greater investment floods into the domestic top division, the A-League, and fanbases become vaster and more established. Well-known names have moved to play their domestic football in the country, while similarly the country continues to export more and more talented young stars.

Operating their top flight on a franchise system not dissimilar to the MLS in the United States, financially-strong, successful clubs are able to be born out of far less heritage and pre-established history than in traditional promotion and relegation systems, but it does also present officials in charge of Australian football’s premier division a different dilemma.

Player Spotlight: Cameron Carter-Vickers

Cameron Carter-Vickers is an English-born United States international centre back who currently plays for Championship side Luton, on loan from Premier League side Tottenham.

The 22-year-old talented defender was born in Southend-on-Sea and began his football career playing as a youngster for local side Catholic United, before being spotted by scouts from Tottenham and joining Spurs’ academy from the age of 11.

Player Spotlight: Altankhuyag Murun

Altankhuyag Murun is a Mongolian international striker who since 2016 has played for Ulaanbaatar City in his native country’s top flight, the Mongolian Premier League.

The 30-year-old began playing football in his native Mongolia as a youngster, representing Selenge Press for two seasons in the Mongolian Premier League between 2006 and 2008, before a season with Ulaanbaatar University.

Cover Feature: Football in the Sunshine State

Florida is a state in the USA crying out for an established, successful top division soccer team and David Beckham’s newest MLS venture, Inter Miami, are hoping to fulfil just such a wish. With a large soccer-obsessed Hispanic community, it seems the perfect location for a club of this kind to blossom and grow into something truly inspired.

Both Miami and the wider Floridian state have a detailed, if perhaps unspectacular, history with soccer. With a lengthy list of since defunct football clubs in Florida, including a handful from Miami itself and iconic former North American Soccer League side Fort Lauderdale Strikers, who can count George Best and Gordon Banks among their storied alumni, it is a tough place to maintain a football club, but one with a ready-made and hungry fanbase.
